Let's have a little perspective here... There's no doubt about it - gas is high and may get higher. Trips of a couple hundred miles are becoming too expensive. Is that a reason not to enjoy fishing? We think not - maybe just a reason to change what we've been doing. There's a lot of overlooked water within an hour or so of home. Let's look at some numbers. We'll assume a tow vehicle that gets 20 MPG. Dale Hollow is about 160 miles away - a 3 plus hour drive. That's 320 miles round trip. Using $3.25 per gallon times 16 Gal. gives us a fuel cost of $52.00. Six hours on the road plus eight fishing and we'll have to throw in about $25.00 more for meals and soft drinks. Add a launch fee and some gas the outboard uses and you're knocking on the door of a hundred bucks for the trip. Ouch! Let's go somewhere else. Cave Run, Herrington, Taylorsville, Cedar Creek, a dozen or more of the small lakes and several excellent streams are an hour away - a hundred mile round trip (Some as close as a 50 mile round trip). A hundred mile trip is 5 gallons - $16.25 - with free launch at about half of them. Load the cooler with sandwiches and cheap soft drinks courtesy of Sams club or Save A Lot and the trip cost drops from a hundred to about twenty - five bucks. Split that with a buddy and it becomes a real cheap day on the water. Added bonus - you get home from a long day at ten instead of two in the morning with a lot less wear and tear on truck and trailer. In central Kentucky we're luckier than most - there's more water nearby than we'll ever have time to learn. And one of the lakes - the new Cedar Creek - is now producing 20 inch bass on a regular basis. Now ain't you glad you read this? Good fishin'! |
