Estée Lauder Companies Inc. announced today that it has completed its acquisition of innovative perfume brand, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle.
Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle originated in 2000 as a collection of nine fragrances crafted by perfumers from all over the world and curated by Parisian perfumer Frédéric Malle.
Perfumers traditionally operate behind the scenes, giving credit for their scents to the fashion house or celebrity on the bottle. Yet Malle turned this tradition on its head by packaging each fragrance in his Editions collection in a bottle featuring the name of the perfumer. The perfumes were marketed at a specially-designed store with photos of perfumers displayed next to the scents.
The current Frédéric Malle collection encompasses 21 fragrances created by 12 master perfumers. They are sold through five architecturally distinctive stand-alone stores in Paris and New York, as well as through Barneys New York in the United States and Liberty in London.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
